Description
Soft, chewy, and incredibly versatile, these homemade tortillas are so easy to make with just four pantry staples! Perfect for tacos, quesadillas, wraps, or enjoying warm with a pat of butter. You’ll never go back to store-bought once you taste the freshness of these simple tortillas.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or substitute with whole wheat flour)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
- ¾ cup warm water
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the oil or melted butter and blend until the mixture is crumbly. Gradually add warm water, stirring until a soft, non-sticky dough forms.
- Rest the Dough: Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- Divide and Shape: Divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten slightly with your hand. On a floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle, about 6-8 inches wide.
- Cook the Tortillas: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for 30-45 seconds on one side until bubbles form and golden spots appear. Flip and cook the other side for 30 seconds. Stack cooked tortillas under a clean towel to keep warm.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve warm with your favorite fillings, or store for later use.
Notes
- Storage Tip: Store leftover tortillas in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze with parchment paper between each one for up to 3 months.
- Customizations: Make them whole wheat by swapping out the all-purpose flour, or try adding a pinch of spices like cumin for a flavor twist.
- Hot Pan is Key: Ensure your skillet is hot before cooking for the best texture and flavor.
