Creamy Chicken Cordon Bleu is a comforting twist on the classic! Crispy breaded chicken is stuffed with ham and Swiss cheese, then baked to perfection and smothered in a rich, creamy sauce. Perfect for family dinners, date nights, or special occasions, this recipe is as elegant as it is easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 slices of deli ham
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Creamy Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Butterfly the chicken breasts and pound to an even thickness.
  3. Place a slice of ham and Swiss cheese inside each chicken breast. Fold and secure with toothpicks.
  4. Set up a dredging station with flour in one bowl, beaten eggs in another, and breadcrumbs mixed with Parmesan, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in the third.
  5. Dredge each chicken breast in flour, dip into eggs, and coat with breadcrumbs.
  6. Heat a skillet with a drizzle of oil and sear the chicken for 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Transfer chicken to a baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until fully cooked.
  8. In a saucepan, melt butter and whisk in flour to create a roux. Gradually add chicken broth and heavy cream, whisking until smooth.
  9. Stir in Dijon mustard and Parmesan cheese, then season with salt and pepper. Simmer until thickened.
  10. Pour the creamy sauce over the baked chicken and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For an extra crispy texture, use panko breadcrumbs.
  • Substitute Gruyère or provolone cheese for Swiss for a different flavor.
  • Prep ahead by assembling the chicken, then bake when ready to serve.
  • Freeze uncooked, breaded chicken breasts for up to 3 months for an easy make-ahead option.
